The Digital & Graphic Design Trends of 2018 [Infographic]

Design moves quickly, but that doesn’t mean that trends pop up out of nowhere. As design evolves alongside improving technological capabilities, trends emerge as a response to changing consumer tastes and needs. And though the word “trend” suggests that something may just be temporary, design trends are quite meaningful. They are a reflection of the world around us and what we perceive as normal, usable, and attractive at any given time.

The design team at Coastal Creative predicts that design in 2018 will be all about contrast: double exposures, photographs overlaid with vectors, flat illustrations with thoughtful movements built in, and 3D aesthetics on 2D mediums.

Contrast is a fitting motif for the times, given that distinction between the real and digital worlds grows blurrier and blurrier with each passing year. We all consume plenty of content that pushes at this boundary (think Snapchat filters, or I-can’t-believe-that-is-not-a-photograph CGI), and design in 2018 reflects this blending of distinct elements. The trends of this year sum up the times that we live in quite well:
